StoWiki/ blog/ sysadmin/ shfs and hardware detection

Now that I've turned off my old server I've started to look at things that were working on the old system but now are not.

I had samba running on the old server, but I was using it only to access my home directory there, so I decided not to install it on the new one and use other tool. Before starting to search for a replacement I've found shfs and after trying it I've decided that it is enough for my current needs and, best of all, I can use it also through the Internet without opening additional ports or protocols.

Also, I was using a LaCie 8in1 card reader to copy my photos from an SD card to the server, but now that it is off I moved the card reader to my main computer (a PowerBook G4) but it was not working out of the box as it did on the Pentium IV, so I googled a little bit and found that article and following it I made it work.

I still have not started to look at it, but I want the previous script to work automatically, so I've decided that I'm going to learn a little bit about hardware detection systems like discover and hotplug and probably I'll give a try to udev.
